Mom’s the Life of the Party: Mother’s Day Shoot Behind the Scenes

For this year’s Mother’s Day shoot, we wanted to showcase the deep bonds between mothers and daughters, featuring plenty of laugher, smiles, heartwarming embraces, and – you guessed it – incredible ensembles.

There’s no better way to capture the essence of the mother / daughter relationship than letting the moms from the shoot talk about what it was like to be photographed with their kids, what being a parent means to them, and how they like to spend their special day.

Since she’s the life of the party, it might come as no surprise that when mothers come together with their daughters (and occasionally a furry friend), you can expect some funny antics. Find out what it was like for Deon and her daughter, and Emily and her two daughters, to take part in this heartfelt expression of family bonding.

How was it to be photographed with your family? What were they feeling?

Deon

“It was a proud mama moment for me to shoot with my daughter. I started having my kids at an older age (35) and at that time, I assumed my modeling career would be ending soon thereafter. I did take a long break from it to be a stay-at-home mom while they were young, but never in a million years did I think I would be a working model again at 50 years old, shooting with my teenage girl. I’m so proud of the young adult she’s growing into and that we were able to work together. I could see she felt really special being made up and getting her hair done. At the end of the day, she asked me how she could keep everything set so it would last for school the next day!”

Emily

“This was a day I will never forget. We had so much fun! I was so happy for my children to experience with me the incredible energy of a big shoot like this one. And we will have the beautiful pictures as a memory.”

Which outfit or piece was your favorite from the shoot? Why?

Deon

“My favorite outfit was the one my daughter and I got to wear when we shot stills and video. We were able to move around freely and smile, hold hands and just be silly. It was a lovely experience to have with my daughter and I’m so happy Chico’s invited us to create the moment and immortalize it forever! In true Chico’s form, it was classic. I believe I was wearing a gorgeous denim like tunic with silver embellishments around the neckline and my daughter was wearing a white top with embroidery around the neckline, all shades of blue, my favorite color!”

Emily

“I appreciate the high-end quality of the Chico’s clothing and their flattering colors, in general.

My favorite piece from the shoot was the black bathing suit with the mesh shoulder strap, really cool and classy.”

Were there any “blooper” moments on set?

Deon

“Well, our dog, L.O.L. (yes, her name is Laughing Out Loud and we call her “L.O.L.” for short) joined us at the shoot. She’s normally a well-behaved dog, extremely loyal and fun.  But I think being around a lot of new people at the shoot must’ve made her act a bit out of character and a little nervous. During one of the shots, as the lights were flashing away, capturing every moment of me onset being fabulous, L.O.L. must’ve gotten really excited, ran up to me suddenly, and let’s just say tried to get a little frisky with my leg. Inappropriate conduct was attempted in front of everyone, (laughed at), and had to be shut down immediately. LOL!!! (Pun intended).”

How, with whom and where will you celebrate Mother’s Day this year?

Deon

“One of the best Mother’s Days I ever had was when I went to a gospel brunch at BB King’s House of Blues in NYC with my husband, son and daughter. The combination of live music and food can’t be beat! The choir was awesome, the buffet was great. I even got to go up on stage as a special shout out to moms, for the event. I’d love to do something along those lines again this year, now that COVID restrictions are loosening up. It would be nice to go out.”

Emily

“I will probably go to the beach club with my husband and children and have a lovely day together.”

What do you want for Mother’s Day?

Deon

“I’ll take a Rolex watch. I feel like being one of the heads of any major corporation for over ten years would reap some major benefits. So, I’ve raised a couple of really nice humans thus far and run a successful home. Qualifies! Mama Inc. will take her watch now.”

Emily

“Another Chico’s shoot!”

What was the best piece of advice someone gave you on being a mother?

Deon

“The best advice I got was to “sleep when your kids sleep”, especially when they’re babies. I can’t say I followed that advice, but looking back, I should have! Other “things” can wait. Take care of your family and take care of you. Raising kids is the most rewarding, beautiful, curious and loving thing you can ever do, but it can also be a lot of hard work. Allow yourself to take breaks, and the best time to do it when they do.”

Emily

“Follow your intuition above all rules.”

What was the best piece of advice someone gave you on being a mother?

Deon

“The best advice I’d give is to ask questions from other moms and get help when you need it. As women, we tend to take on a lot of responsibility and do everything for everybody, leaving our needs last. Sometimes we need help or even time collect ourselves. Ask for what you need. Sometimes that’s the best thing you can do for your family (and yourself).”

Emily

“Fill up your own cup first so you can show up as the best version of yourself.”

As you can tell, these moms had a wonderful day with their daughters during this exciting shoot! You can find Deon and Emily’s preferred pieces in our Mother’s Day collection.
