Behind The Chic

The Art of Craftsmanship

From exquisite embroidery techniques and hand-cut details, intricate metalwork and luxurious fabrics, this season we were inspired by the superior craftsmanship and creativity found throughout India. Here are a few of our standout pieces and the stories behind them.

The Shisha Jacket

We pulled an art piece we had in our design archives from over a decade ago for the idea behind this jacket. Then our design team traveled to India in November 2019 to work on it firsthand with our factory vendor. The result? A collector’s dream for your closet featuring strategically placed embellishments—approx. 282 beads (some hand beaded) and 132 mirrors!

Inspired by the centuries old block printing technique used in India, the mirror embroidery work is also known as “shisha work.” The embroidery is created by using small pieces of mirrors and stitched between colored embroidery. Our interpretation uses tonal thread for a play on the classic indigo and white combination.

The Hibiscus Jacket

One of India’s most enduring artistic traditions is its myriad forms of embroidery. Our designers fell in love with the craftsmanship, and created exquisitely embroidered pieces of their own—like this jacket inspired by the hibiscus flower.

The colors reflect the various shades found in the hibiscus flower and welcome to the arrival of summer. The floral motifs are set over a delicate honeycomb lattice, then the embroidery is intricately designed using countless stitches. The hand-cut details are etched by skilled artisans, taking over 40 hours per garment! Crafted in a breathable linen-blend fabric made for light layering during the warmer months. Dressed up or down, you’ll turn heads every time you wear this work of art.

The Embellished Tunic

Beadwork has been practiced throughout India for thousands of years and worn by royalty for special occasions. This tunic is embellished with over 1,100 sequins and beads, plus 45,000 stitches! Press play to get a glimpse of the process.

Derived from the flax plant, linen is among the oldest fabrics in the world. Soft, durable and breathable, it’s easy to see why it’s a must-wear in hot climates like India. And with warmer temps on the way, we focused on relaxed silhouettes (like our new linen ankle pant), intricate details (cutwork and tonal embroidery) and wrinkle-free pieces so you’ll keep cool while staying true to your style.

Silk

As of today, India is the second largest silk producer in the world. Smooth, soft and elegant, silk has been known as the “Queen of all fabrics” for centuries. So, it goes without saying that you’ll feel like royalty wearing these luxurious silk pieces.
