The February Issue: Into Africa

The word "Safari" comes from the Arabic word "safar", which means "travelling, voyaging, journey". This month, with spring just on the horizon, we're yearning for the outdoors, fresh air, bright skys, waving grass. Our newest collection is inspired by the rich earthen hues of the Serengeti and by the natural wonder of the wild world, but the weather is keeping us in. Join us, then, on a safari you can take right at home: we've got tips for what to read, drink, and more (not to mention, what to wear!) for a voyaging state of mind all month.

The Manicure

Base color is CND Shellac Cocoa. Design colors are CND Cream Puff, CND Cocoa and CND Black Pool.

Our nails are one of our favorite places to express ourselves. It’s fun, it’s statement making, and they’re so easy to switch up. We’re just wild about how Nashville based makeup and nail artist Jen Tsourvakas (@the_jen_of_all_trades) of Parlour 3 took the rich colors of our Serengeti inspired new collection and did this fun riff on animal print and earth tones just for us!

The Cocktail

We call this delicious after dinner cocktail “The Zebratini”. Starring Baileys alongside White Chocolate Liqueur, it’s the perfect finishing touch for sitting by the fire cold winter’s night, dreaming of adventures to come. Pairs perfectly with our zebra poncho too.

The Zebratini
2 oz Baileys
.25 oz Smirnoff Vodka
.25 oz White Chocolate Liqueur
Shake with Ice. Strain into martini glass and enjoy!

The Reading List

If we can’t go somewhere in person, books are the next best thing. This list includes the inspiring rise of Africa’s first female president, a globe spanning search for a valuable bird of prey, a lesser known classic from one of the greatest authors of all time, and a novel that transports not just across the globe but across time.

Madame President by Helene Cooper- The harrowing, but triumphant story of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, leader of the Liberian women’s movement, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the first democratically elected female president in African history.

The Falcon Thief by Joshua Hammer- Think of it as a global safari-meets-thriller. The Falcon Thief whisks readers from the volcanoes of Patagonia to Zimbabwe’s Matobo National Park, and from the frigid tundra near the Arctic Circle to luxurious aviaries in the deserts of Dubai, all in pursuit of a man who is reckless, arrogant, and gripped by a destructive compulsion to make the most beautiful creatures in nature his own. It’s a story that’s part true-crime narrative, part epic adventure—and wholly unputdownable until the very last page.

Out of Darkness, Shining Light by Petina Gappah- A dazzling, powerful novel about the 19th century explorer David Livingstone and the extraordinary group of Africans who carried his body 1,500 miles from the interior of the “dark continent” to the sea. It’s an ambitious and artful telling of an epic journey written by an award-winning, rising star of African literature. Named one of the best books of 2019 by NPR.

The Films

We never get sick of Out of Africa, of course, but we are also always interested in what’s new and different. Here are three different views on the tremendous variety that is Africa.

The Wedding Party- Nigeria has one of the largest film industries in the world, and this romantic comedy-drama is one of its biggest hits of all time, premiering to accolades at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival. Weddings are one of the best ways to peek at a different culture’s slice of life. And the fashion is spectacular!

Africa- Iconic naturalist David Attenborough takes us on a tour of Africa’s rich, abundant, and threatened natural wonders in this multi-part series from the BBC.

Queen of Katwe- A heartwarming story about a little girl in an African slum, who becomes a championship chess player is especially moving because it’s true. Who can resist? Produced and starring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o.

The Look

This sleek tiger print statement jacket is a safari-on-a-hanger. Pair with denim for a dressed up weekend look or black pants for the office. Either way, you’ll be dressed for adventure.
