All About Baxter

Baxter (nee Mabellene) is the star of our Holiday Gift Guide. Despite a grueling schedule of photo shoots, TV shows, and commercials, Baxter was kind enough to squeeze us in for a few questions over a cup of green tea at the chic Mercer Hotel in New York’s SoHo.

Hi Baxter, thanks for sitting with Inside Chic. Let’s start at the beginning. Where are you from and how did you end up in New York City?

I was born in North Carolina. One day, when I was a young dog at the shelter (I never knew my mother), a person named Michelle came and picked me up in a truck. I loved Michelle right away. She had a crate for me to ride in, but I had another idea. Instead of getting in the crate, I decided to ride on her lap and she let me! I spent the whole trip looking out the window, which was so fun. I knew I was going to be happy with Michelle.

Have you always been so independent?

Definitely, I’ve always done exactly what I want to do. If I want to go outside and roam the neighborhood, I do! If I want to take a nap on the couch, I do! Some people say that we Terriers are a little full of ourselves, but in my opinion we’re just very confident. I have a lot of energy and ambition.

When did you get bitten by the acting bug?

Great question! I’ll never forget… One day, one of my dog siblings, a Border Collie named Taboo, was sitting at the kitchen table. There was a birthday cake in front of her, and she had to look at the cake and pretend that she was blowing out the candles on the cake. I watched intently from the other room, because I knew I could do that too! When she was finished, I rushed in and sat on the chair with my paws on the table in front of the cake, just like Taboo. I had never gone to drama school or been trained, I just watched and learned.

How did you get into commercials and become a dog star?

After the birthday cake episode, Michelle sent pictures of me to Taboo’s agent and let them know what I could do. They started me off like any other mutt who’s just breaking into the business with simple jobs, ones where all I had to do was sit, or stay, or speak. It was fun, but I knew I could do more! I caught on in the industry fast because I was such a quick study. They say I’ve got that adorable, endearing look, and who am I to argue?

What are some of your favorite things to do in your free time?

I love the waterI love to swim and dive off the dock. Some other favorites are Frisbee and flyball. I love being in the car. And I love to sleep in bed with Michelle, especially under the covers, because I’m always cold. I also love playing with Taboo and the rest of my dog family. We have a ton of fun!

Is there anything you dislike?

There are only two things: the bath and getting my nails done. When I see the nail clippers come towards me, I take off in the other direction.

What are your favorite treats?

I love everything! But if I had to choose, my favorites are chicken, turkey, and cheese. I also love human food, which I get when I’m working. Sometimes I’ll even try to steal the human food from the table. Okay, I admit, it’s actually one of my favorite things to do. If the people walk away, I make my move and sneak it off the plate. I know I’m not supposed to do that, but sometimes I can’t help myself. I am a dog, after all.

Special thanks to Baxter’s owner, Michelle Paulucci, and Baxter’s agents at All Creatures Great & Small. And most of all, to Baxter.
