Celebrating Heroes

When we worked with Lee Woodruff, one the women featured in our Style My Way campaign this fall, we were inspired not only by her sly wit, her good humor, and charm, but most of all by the work she and her husband, Bob Woodruff, do every day.

After Lee’s husband, Bob, was badly injured by a roadside bomb in Iraq, while on assignment for ABC news, their lives flipped upside down. Lee told us about how she rushed to Germany, where Bob had been evacuated, not knowing if he was going to live or die. As Bob began the long journey to recovery, they both took stock of how lucky they were, and in response, launched the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which in ten years has raised over 45 Million dollars for the care of injured veterans and their families. As Lee herself says, sometimes a negative can be turned into a positive. It’s all in what you choose to do.

The pinnacle of The Bob Woodruff Foundation’s fundraising efforts each year is an amazing event, called “Stand Up For Heroes.” It’s a star studded evening, at Madison Square Garden, in New York City, where the best and brightest names in stand up comedy, along with an iconic band, perform for a roomful of benefactors, and more importantly, 50 veterans and their caregivers, whom are all flown to New York for a whirlwind few days. This year will see John Oliver, Trevor Noah, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers take the stage.

At the shoot this summer, Lee asked us if Chico’s might be interested in getting involved. We jumped at the chance. Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the privilege to dress 50 caregivers and female veterans for the journey and the big night. As an organization, we’re so grateful to have been given the opportunity to work with these truly inspiring women to help them look and feel fabulous. We’ve collected a few of their style stories that we are proud to share with you.

Name: Staff Sergeant Jean Howard, US Army

Location: North Carolina

Style: “Business Casual”

“Our amazing associate, Roxana, helped style Jean. Jean had never been to Chico’s, so while she was hopeful about finding an outfit that would fit her look, she was also a little nervous. Roxana quickly put her at ease. She selected this classic travelers outfit with the faux leaf jacket. She told us she could not believe her eyes when she saw herself in the mirror. It was a beautiful emotional moment. We all teared up, as she told us how amazing she felt.”- Chico’s Cross Creek Mall, North Carolina.

Name: Donna McGibbon, Mom and Caregiver of Staff Sergeant George Tyler, United States Army

Location: New Jersey

Style: “I wear a lot of black. I like long tops that slenderize me!”

“I just want to thank everyone at Chico’s for taking part in this extraordinary Stand Up For Heroes Event.  I had the pleasure of meeting an amazing woman by the name of Donna this morning in my boutique!  She was the woman selected to visit my store for a style appointment for the event in November.  We spent the morning wardrobing her and finding that perfect fit. We had an amazing time together!  She is such an inspiration to us as a proud mom who has given so much for her family and community.  We all had tears and laughs as we shared details about our experiences and our lives.  Learning that Donna raised an amazing and brave son who sacrificed so much for his country made a lasting impressing on us. It was Donna’s first time in a Chico’s boutique and I am sure it will not be her last time.  It was a complete honor to represent our company as we take part in these wonderful events and to be part of the experience of giving back to our community. She promised to tell us all about the event and she also promised to bring her son and his therapy dog do in to meet us!”- Andrea Safarov and the entire Chico’s team in Sea Girt, NJ

Name: Denise Campbell-Parson, wife of Sergeant William Parson, Unites States Army

Location: Virginia

Style: “Conservative”

“This was an amazing event for for us in Old Town! Denise said “this was the best she has felt in a long time.” Thanks for making us a part of such an wonderful experience!- Lori and the team in Alexandria, VA

Thank you Chico’s for your support to veterans and their caregivers. As one of the recipients, I will forever be amazed and grateful for the service level received at your Clearwater location, and by those during the #stand4heroes fitting in NYC. Your staff made me feel very special from the moment I was contacted. Xo
