A few weeks ago a dance troupe comprised of women of all shapes and sizes, all over the age of forty, gave a performance to a gorgeously remixed version of Chaka Khan’s classic, “Ain’t Nobody” in the heart of New York City. Why? Because they love to dance and they could. To say that Faye stands out, is an understatement. Front and center, she was the social media coordinator of the day, taking selfies and leading all the women in cheers.
Faye, 54, Stunt Woman
How do you feel about the performance later today?
I know this sounds corny, but I’m so excited because dance is my life. I get to go outside, perform, and look good. My friends are going to be there. We’re going to show everybody what we can do and that age is just a number. We can do it, and shine, and look great.
Has anyone ever told you that you can’t do something because of your age?
People have told me so many times that I couldn’t dance anymore because I’m over 40. People have told me that I couldn’t start my acting career because I’m over 40. I had a teacher in college tell me that I would never graduate. I proved them all wrong because if you tell me that, Faye will make a way. When people tell me I can’t do something that I know I can, my reaction is “I’ll show you.” I don’t have to react much because my actions prove what I can do.
Why are you dancing through life?
I’m dancing through life because it makes my heart smile. Someone told me years ago that I was good at it. I probably wasn’t but because they said it, I became good at it. It’s been a part of my life forever and ever. I will probably be dancing in heaven. It’s the only thing that I know that I can do and do with confidence. No one can tell me anything better. No one can tell me anything different. When I dance I feel like an elegant queen. I look like a gazelle. When I dance, I feel like it’s the only one thing that I can own and it’s mine. I do it my way and no one else does it that way.
