A few weeks ago a dance troupe comprised of women of all shapes and sizes, all over the age of forty, gave a performance to a gorgeously remixed version of Chaka Khan’s classic, “Ain’t Nobody” in the heart of New York City. Why? Because they love to dance and they could. What we love about Lisa is that after twenty years as a successful PR exec, she’s turned to pursuing her longtime love of acting. Read on for more!
Lisa, 50, PR Executive-Turned-Actress
What do you do for a living?
Like a lot of women, I wear a lot of hats. I’ve worked at a small boutique publicity firm for over 20 years now. I also do a lot of philanthropic work for homeless women and children on Long Island. And, I just recently embarked upon an acting career. When I turned 50, I said to my family, “I am going to start acting again!” It’s why I came to New York. For the last four to five months I have started following a dream that I’ve always had.
Can you tell us a little bit about the dance troupe?
I’m so excited to be here today. We’re a dance troupe of women over 40 and we’re going to be dancing near Madison Square Park. Dancing with all these women is amazing. It feels so good. Everyone is at a different level of dance in this troupe. It’s been really fun to watch the women who walked in here in the beginning, not feeling so confident and hid in the back, start to inch their way up to the front, as they feel more and more confident. The camaraderie is incredible. And personally, it’s so fun for me to dance. I don’t get to do it enough, I wish I could do it every day.
How do you feel about being 50 and how does it affect your style?
I feel that at 50, I am doing more of what I want to do with my life than I ever have before. I feel healthy. I feel like I’m able to move, which is wonderful. I get a few aches and pains but I’m working through them. I’ve had an eclectic style my whole life and I think I’ve carried that into my 50s with me. I still think of myself as a 20 something. Dress how you want to dress and feel how you want to feel. If you feel good in a certain outfit, wear it. Style is ageless. If you can rock it at 50, wear it.
Why are you dancing through life?
I’m dancing through life because it makes me feel alive.
