Inspired by Italy: Lake Como

Cinny Murray is Chico's President.

One of my favorite countries to visit is Italy. I love the old world way of doing things; the hand touch and craft that goes into making everything from shoes to jewelry. Everywhere you look there’s something that delights the eye and inspires. The food isn’t bad either! This fall, I was lucky enough to travel to Italy with Chico’s head of design, Tracy Traver, on business. After flying all night, we started our journey in Milan, looking through all of the fashionable boutiques (after an espresso and a pancake, of course!) Then, we traveled to Lake Como, where many of our print studios are located. I can see why the artists are so inspired; there is beauty everywhere. We ate a lot of pasta, but you walk or bike all over Italy, so we kept up with our meals.

The breakfast spread at our hotel, Villa Flori, was heavenly. You can see the lake just outside the door. It was a spectacular way to start the day.

Then, we hopped on bikes to head into town to look around and visit some of the famous fabric mills and printmakers. It was a perfect early fall day for a ride. We saw the beautiful landscape and hopefully worked off a little bit of breakfast.

We loved the workspaces at our first stop. Those arches are so classic and clean, and the skylights let the light in. Nothing is more refreshing than greenery indoors.

We immediately got down to business, pulling prints and brainstorming. There was a lot to look through and talk about. Tracy has been working with printmakers in Italy for years. She went to college at the University in Perugia, where she first fell in love with Italian style.

We were starving, so it was back on the bikes and off to lunch. We stopped at the most charming restaurant in town, directly on the lake. The view was stunning and the food was just as good as the view.

I love old doors—there’s something about them that inspires me. They are everywhere you look in Italy. Maybe they’ll show up in a print?

We stopped for a quick coffee before we quickly had to check out, change, and run to the airport. Doesn’t Tracy look fabulous? She’s in head to toe Chico’s Black Label. Then, off to Rome…

No rest for the weary! Stay tuned!

  1. Lake Como is one of my most favorite places in the world. Like you, I love everything about it, the gorgeous landscape, the lake, the people and the food! Thank you for the little virtual vacation Cinny, I loved it, almost as good as being there.

  2. Never have been to Italy , but it is on my bucket list . I know when I ever get there , I will have all my Chico outfits with me. When I travel, the first think to do is find a Chico store ?. Husband dose not even ask, where we are going.

I’ve worked for the company for over 8 years now. For the past three years I have seen many of my clients leave. I’ve reached out to them and there all saying what happened to chico’s style? I totally agree. What happened to the unique style we use to have? My colossal sales and customers are gone. So sad. Even the associates aren’t buying!

They are making everything way too long. Every time I was in the store, everyone was complaining about the length of the clothing. Please pay attention to your customers.

  5. Chico’ s apparel is both easy to travel with & easy to wear. Comfort is important as Italy begs us to look, explore and gaze at the beauty of a country to visit again and again…..

Please make jackets that cover your tush…and taper in at the waist a wee bit more.
Sometimes boxy makes you look heavier than you really are.
Keep up the great job. Love the style and look you are aiming for!

I’m amazed at the number of new designs, beautiful fabrics, and warm, friendly sales associates at the Lincolnshire, Illinois store. I’m taking my sister to Italy and Paris next April for her 65th birthday! Chicos will be coming with me!

I’m sorry but everyone looks like my grandmother. I love her but do not want to dress like her!
Chico’s please stop using women over the age of 70 to promote your brand to me. Yes I will be there one day with the help of God, but not now, not yet.
Very disappointed that Chico’s has decided to take this route. To my knowledge, women in this demographic tend to stop buying as much.
Please remove me from your mailer and email list.
    I’ll return in 30 years.

As a member of the lost-waist older generation, I’m grateful to Chico’s for having clothes that I can wear & feel attractive in. Everybody markets for the kiddies. It’s nice somebody thinks about us. There’s plenty of trendy stuff for them at Chico’s.

Leaving for Rome & Positano to celebrate my 65th Birthday and my suitcase is filled with Chico’s. I have two weeks of outfits in a 29 inch carry on thanks to Zenergy! Thank you for great fabrics and style!!

Thank you for taking us on a leg of your journey with you. Italy looks stunning! I hope to visit one day. It is fun to know the meaning behind some of the Chico brand prints too!

I just read some of the other comments people left and want to say I was just in a Chico’s store last week and an older lady (in her early 70’s) mentioned just what some of the commentators on this blog mentioned. But she mentioned it to ME, another customer! She said something to the effect of “I wish they would make the tops a bit longer. They would look great on you (I’m petite size) but for someone like me with a long waist, it does not cover where i’d like it to cover!”. She was so cute!

  12. I was just in Lake Como (Laglio) in August, with stops in Portofino as well as deep inside Tuscany. Italian style is fantastic. If Chico’s moves more in that direction, it can only mean good things. I am in my 50’s and like to look younger vs. older…or at least just my age vs. older. I enjoy clothing pieces you can dress up or down. I also like clothes that give me shape vs. taking it away. I love my Chico’s purchases…but I used to find more things there than I have lately…I only say that as a challenge. Go Italian and you can’t go wrong! I will always be a Chico’s believer. Who knows, maybe some day I will choose to work there just for the fun of it!

  13. To those of you who complained that the clothes look as if they are made for a 70-year-old, what did you mean? If you are referring to boxy jackets, I would agree….I am 68, and I like longer tops. I am tall, too, so I don’t want shorter lengths. I don’t care for a lot of glitz, either. I still shop at Chico’s often.

I hope that this trip to Italy also inspired you to make available items for petites, I love all the items that I see when I walk into one of your stores but unfortunately I can’t ever purchase all the items available because being from Italy, born and raised there, I am only 5 ft. in height and can’t wear most of your beautiful items. Please keep adding to the petites collection !

I like jackets that cover your bottom and not end at the just below the waistline as for younger people, how about a beautiful black blazer with gold buttons like we used to buy at Jacobson’s in Grosse Pointe Michigan and…. Slacks that are not thin like leggings thru the the thigh. My thighs are too big for your pants, legs should just fall straight from the waist. Your pants are all like, leggings thin and narrow and my thighs need a straight fall to the the shoe.
You have those packable pants but I do not like them fabric too thin!!!! We have cold winters in Michigan and the north and need wool pants or heavier fabric.

  16. Anne Maconi

I love the Payton pants. Great fabric , fits well. Lovely tops. Items reveals my 40 lb weight loss. Be back soon. Will also shop back in Jersey where I’m from. Anne

I have never posted a reply before, but felt compelled. I think Chico’s Clothes are fabulous. My Mother bought a lot from you when she was alive 10 years ago and I thought they were strictly for older women. After I lost her I started going to her favorite boutique almost as a way to be part of her. I fell in love with the new looks. I think you are reaching a broad spectrum of the population. Your clothes have become smart, affordable, and comfortable. I used to buy a lot of Escada and St John. I do not see the need to any more. I find great looking things in your boutiques and on line. I have the white perforated dress. I wore it with a few special pieces of jewelry and a great scarf and friends thought I had on a High end designer dress. In my books, just keep doing what you are. Thanks, Patti from Texas

Your clothing looks good on the models but I am only 5,4 so I can’t wear most of what you advertise..I keep trying but surely you will eventually try to please some of us shorter women. Thank you.

What a lovely way to start the morning. I was in Malta this past autumn and the artistic buildings
all the food and the beautiful people were beyond my expectations. I wore chicos and felt lovely.
I found a second home and am making plans to return. Perhaps via Italy the next time.
    So gorgeous.
