You’ve just finished your last bite of seared scallops and taken a final sip of Pinot Grigio. You hug your best girlfriend and exit the restaurant laughing when you feel it: an early September shudder. The first hint of autumn chill in the air.
It’s not yet time to break out the wool sweaters and gloves—but your summer sarongs suddenly feel out of place. Welcome to the summer-to-fall transition—the time of year when every woman has to get a little creative with her closet. Here are five ways to transition your wardrobe into fall.
1. Pair Long Tops with Slim Pants
Transitional dressing is an art—especially when the thermometer is up, then down and back again. Your no-fail formula for chic? The look that’s flattering on every body type: a long top paired with slim pants.
Now is the perfect time for crisp, No-Iron shirts paired with So Slimming® Brigitte pants (so many colors and prints this season!). Or swap your sleeveless shirts for ¾-sleeve or long-sleeve tunics. Tunics offer just the right coverage and look beautiful paired with our new Tailored Leggings. (Think: the look of 5-pocket pants with the supreme comfort of leggings!) The result: A cozying-into-fall feeling that’s lightweight and looks pulled together.
As more fall activities start popping up on your social calendar, you’ll know it’s time to take the next step: put the sandals aside and wear your slim pants and leggings with boots or booties. There’s nothing more autumn-esque than the (easy to walk in!) booties at White House Black Market. Anyone can pull these off with just about any outfit (trust us).
2. Add Lightweight Layers
Sure, we’re excited about apple picking and pumpkin carving this season, but for us, the real fall fun starts when it’s time to layer our outfits. Printed ruanas and ponchos are perfect for lightweight cover. (Florals are lovely for the fall transition, so we’re especially drawn to our desert bloom-inspired styles as well as classic fall animal prints). The beauty of these pieces is their versatility—they give your outfit an instant style boost and can be worn over just about anything.
What to wear when the AC is up or the walk downtown feels a bit chilly after dinner? A classic cardigan, of course. Whether you choose a button-front cardigan or The Perfect Layer Cardigan with an open front, you’ll feel cozy and put-together all day. (Plus, cardis look beautiful over a dress—whether you’re wearing your favorite midi-length styles or making the transition into longer maxi dresses for fall.)
As the first leaves begin to change color, you can still wear your summer sweaters and lightweight tops, too—just add a sleek microfiber tank underneath for a bit of warmth.
3. Bring on the Jackets
Moto jackets are essential for evenings out or days at the office. They’re timeless and add sophistication to any outfit—in classic silhouettes as well as new elongated styles. As our Virtual Stylist Shayna said, “It’s the perfect layer for a polished-casual look.”
For drinks with the ladies or a stop at the pumpkin patch, there’s nothing more classic and versatile than a jean jacket. Tunics and leggings, dresses, sweaters and jeans—you can throw a denim jacket over anything and go. From indigo washes to animal prints, they’re chic on (literally) everyone.
4. Play with Color & Texture
An easy way to shift your look into fall? Try on new textures: pleated blouses, faux- suede leggings, jeans with textural details and ribbed twinsets add warmth to your wardrobe and are beautiful this time of year.
You’ll want to refresh your color palette, too. For can’t-go-wrong autumnal shades, choose deep blues, soft yellows and jewel tones, plus spiced reds, cranberries, browns and neutrals. (Forget the old rules. You can still wear your white summer pants, too—just add a pop of fall color or soft texture with a sweater or scarf.)
5. Don’t Forget the Accessories
When it comes to accent pieces, scarves add a touch of color and coziness to any outfit. Wear them draped over your shoulders, knotted, looped around your neck or even as a belt or tied to your handbag for added style. As the weather cools, switch out your lighter-weight scarves for cozier fabrics such as silk, faux fur or wool.
These months (somewhere between scorching summer and bundle-up fall) are the time to make your accessories really stand out. Add an autumn touch to any outfit with a richly colored leather clutch or tote. (Carryall totes will be big as we all get out and about this season.) Go for sleek, mixed-metal jewelry and our exclusive Impression Jasper pieces crafted with genuine stone. When pumpkin-latte season is in full swing, you’ll already have many of the pieces you need for a chic and comfortable fall.
