I really like to go anywhere. A place I visit quite often is New York City. I love the vibrancy of city life and that I can just blend in. I miss that because I live in a smaller town where everyone knows me—I’m married to the mayor! In New York everything is right under your fingertips.
Bar Pitti– This is a little Italian place in the Village that I’ve been going to for 20 years. It’s a neighborhood spot that’s also a little glamorous. I try to go every time I’m in NY. Everything there is always consistently fresh and good. The tiramisu is delicious. Always look at the daily specials on the board—they are to die for!
The Frick Collection– One of my favorite museums in NY because it’s such a beautiful building. It was built by Henry Clay Frick in 1913-14 for his art collection, and it showcases a lot of the great Belgian painters, like Anthony van Dyck and Peter Paul Rubens. I’m from Antwerp, so it takes me back to my roots. And don’t miss the lovely Fragonard Room!
The Highline– This is one of those things you can’t believe is real. It’s a park that runs up the Lower West Side of Manhattan, from the Meatpacking District up through the ’30s, on old raised train tracks. It’s phenomenal. There is art, views of the river, and native plants everywhere. It’s the city like you’ve never seen it before. I love to get lunch at Chelsea Market and find a place to sit and people watch.
The Crosby Street Hotel– Such a refuge that’s also in the middle of everything! Crosby Street is in the heart of SoHo, but the hotel is set back a bit, and it has these big glass doors. It’s so welcoming yet it feels like a secret! The rooms are luxurious and fun at the same time. The decor is beautiful. And they do the best afternoon tea.
